Transport Canada grilled by MPs over Toyota recall

CBC News -- Members of Parliament grilled Transport Canada officials Thursday about what they knew about safety problems with Toyota vehicles — and when they knew it.
-----
But many MPs were not satisfied with the responses, saying they want to put the spotlight on Toyota officials themselves next week.
-----
Transport Canada has received 17 complaints about Toyota cars involving a number of issues over the past three years.
-----
The transport committee meeting was told Transport Canada had received a total of 17 complaints about Toyota cars involving a number of issues in the past three years, but none involving sticky pedals until Toyota informed the department it had received five.

OriginalBudman, look up the Ford Pinto, and I think you'll rescind your statement. They likely know all about it, but its alway a calculation of if the lawsuit costs outweigh the recall costs (including negative publicity and sales effect). But, just as in the pinto case, the recall would have been much cheaper early

The people that died driving these cars cannot be blamed. Yes they may have panicked but they wouldn't have had to if the cars had been running as they should.

This doesn't look like it is going away. And it shouldn't until some answers are actually received.

vizilo - Toyota needs to answer to these "charges". Alot of people have been killed already because of Toyota's neglect. No other automaker has had issues as serious as this. This is not a witch hunt; this is real.

If Toyota knowingly and criminally withheld information, they are in deep doo-doo.

17 in three years? Of course, that's probably a lot considering that the Canadians are very polite and don't like to complain.

What is not being said here. Only 17 complaints in five years. It was Toyota that told them of five complaints. Are we sure there are not some UNION POLITICS being played out here?

Widespread recalls. Just heard on the news yesterday that Ford had a massive recall just a few years back.

It's the Obama, statist pro-union press that's behind much of this. Give me a break ... 17 complaints over the past three years. I'll bet the local highway department had that many complaints last week. Not to mention the Soc Sec Adm, public school system and the US Congress.

Me thinks they doest protest too much!

A complaint is now always a huge issue. Toyota should be answering these questions.

Just keeps getting worse for Toyota. I thought this would fade away by now. They are after all located with a factory here in the U.S. Not wanting a new car necessarily at this point in my life anyway.
